Doctors Without Borders is calling on the Austrian government to do more to ensure that corona vaccines are distributed fairly, even in the poorest countries. “Austria also has an important responsibility here, especially the Ministry of Health, which is currently negotiating vaccine contingents in coordination with the EU,” emphasized Marcus Bachmann, humanitarian adviser for Doctors Without Borders Austria, in a broadcast today.
“Unfortunately, it is currently unclear how Austria wants to contribute to a fair distribution of vaccines beyond its borders,” he criticized. “In view of the corona pandemic, it is essential to ensure that the new vaccines are truly available to everyone, not just those in rich countries.” That would lead to the loss of many additional lives, he said. It would also increase the time before the pandemic can be controlled, possibly for many years. A charity mentality, according to which vaccines are only sold or made available to the poorest countries for free if they are not used here, is not worthy of a country like Austria or the European Union. A coordinated, supportive international approach is necessary. “This pandemic can only be defeated if it is defeated everywhere,” Bachmann said.
