For the third time in a few days, there was an avalanche in the Bundschuhtal on Sunday. Four touring skiers from Carinthia were trapped in a slab of snow and carried away while climbing the Großer Königsstuhl from Rosaninsee. Two touring skiers were partially buried and one completely. The latter was a 28-year-old from Villacher. He was lucky his companions found him and dug him up in ten or fifteen minutes. Alerted mountain rescuers from Tamsweg and Muhr cared for the victim at the scene along with a team of rescue helicopters from Carinthia.
“The man may have suffered a broken thigh,” said Hannes Kocher, district manager of the Lungau Mountain Rescue Service. After first aid by two doctors and emergency paramedics present, the tourist was rescued by means of a recovery rope and flown to a hospital in Carinthia. In addition to seven mountain rescuers from Tamsweg and Muhr and a dog handler from the mountain rescue service, there were also the Alpine police and the ÖAMTC helicopter team from Carinthia.
Several avalanches on the Lungau
Due to the current tense avalanche situation in Lungau Nockberge, the district director appealed to touring skiers to behave defensively on the mountain or refrain from ski tours. “As far as the avalanche alert level goes, today was another tense trio,” Kocher said. “Powder snow 8 to 10 inches deep is on bad soil, a hard layer.”
This week, there have already been several avalanches in Lungau, in which touring skiers or alternative cyclists were partially or fully buried, but fortunately no more seriously injured. Comrade’s rescue worked well. “You have to practice the correct management of emergency teams to rescue colleagues, as today’s mission has shown again,” said Kocher.
