The Austrian U20 ice hockey team lost their third group match against the best teams at the World Cup in Edmonton, but they can still hope to reach the quarterfinals. At 1: 7 (0: 4.1: 0.0: 3) against Russia on Tuesday (local time), the team of team principal Roger Bader scored the first goal through Senna Peeters. The last opponent in the group is the Czech Republic on New Years Eve (8pm CET / ORF Sport + live). A victory would lead the ÖEHV team to the round of 16.
So far, the Austrians have gotten better off against the Russians. With 18 shots, Captain Marco Rossi and company fired over 0:11 against the United States and 0: 4 against Sweden combined. The 1: 4 (28th) consolation goal came from former US Legionnaire Peeters, who is now in action in Sweden. The assistance was provided by the youngest player in the tournament, Marco Kasper, who was only 16 years old. Goalkeeper Jakob Brandner, who plays for Finland, was just shy of standard goalkeeper Sebastian Wraneschitz and blocked 43 shots. Wraneschitz was saved for the last match of the group.
Coach Bader was happy about a new increase in his team. “It was definitely the best match for us at this World Cup. Our goal was to improve in every game. We did it again. We had more chances to score than in previous games and we were also able to keep up with Russia in terms of ice skating. The second third in particular was very good for us, ”said the Swiss. There were also chances of a second hit. “The fact that we were able to win a third against Russia is great for our team.”
Belgian-born Peeters also saw further progress. “We get used to the rhythm better in each game. We work harder and harder, ”explained the 18-year-old.
The last opponent of the ÖEHV group, the Czech Republic, had celebrated their only victory so far with 2-0 against Russia and are also in terms of potential ahead of Austria. However, if the team of U-20 coach Marco Pewal, who reached the top of the world with the boys, but had not received the approval of VSV, the historic first victory in a World Cup, then the quarter-finals they would be perfect.
Bader, however, knows the kind of opponent who lost to the United States 7-0 in the last half. “The Czech Republic is also a great ice hockey nation. They have great defenders, the defense is very good. Everything can happen in a game. We dream of creating a sensation. “
