Austin (pte014 / 04.05.2020 / 10: 37) – The virtual reality video game “Half Life: Alyx” is causing a real boom in virtual reality games. According to the American news portal “Road to VR”, the Steam gaming distribution platform has registered almost one million more users with VR glasses since the game was released. It is the largest user gain in history.
“A great leap”
“It was to be expected beforehand that Half Life: Alyx would lead to a jump in player numbers. This jump has now turned out to be huge,” the report says. The game’s success could lead to a huge step forward for VR applications and their distribution to gamers, according to the online publication.
“Road to VR” analyzed data from Valve Corporation http://valvesoftware.com, the developer of Half Life: Alyx and Steam operator. According to the data, Steam users signed up with around 950,000 new virtual reality glasses in April 2020. A connection to the Half Life: Alyx release on March 23 is highly likely.
Oculus Quest Benefits
Oculus Quest VR glasses benefit more from Half Life: Alyx. The device’s share price doubled in April. Above all, the recently added option to use Oculus Quest as a PC headset probably played a role in this. Despite the success figures, only about two percent of Steam users still wear VR glasses. Due to the high prices of the glasses, it will be a long time before they finally hit the mainstream.
