After virus mutation: Austria imposes a landing ban in South Africa

Britain’s landing ban for aircraft, which was already imposed about a week ago, will also run until January 10, as can be seen in an amendment to the regulation published Monday night.

After more than a week, the new regulation will plug a loophole that, according to media reports, was used by German travelers from South Africa. As reported by “Spiegel Online”, the German Lufthansa had rebooked most of its passengers on AUA flights from Cape Town to Vienna due to the landing ban in effect since 22 December. From there, the passengers would have headed to Germany.

According to the Austrian Airlines website, today a plane took off from Vienna in the direction of Cape Town. The return of a plane from the second largest city in South Africa is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

As before, the ordinance provides exceptions for cargo flights, emergency flights, ambulance and rescue flights, repatriation flights or transfer flights, and flights for the transport of seasonal workers (in agriculture and forestry, as well as care and health personnel ) in compliance with safety regulations.

The new variant of the virus, which was first detected about 10 days ago, has since appeared in several countries. It is said to be 70 percent more contagious than the traditional version of the virus.

South Africa reported more than a million corona cases on Monday. Then the government announced a tightening of containment measures.
