75 years of the Second Republic: “New Chapter” for Austria

Today, 75 years ago, the Republic of Austria celebrated its resurrection after World War II: with the proclamation of independence by Karl Renner (SP), head of the provisional government, the Nazi regime ended.

Three quarters of a century later, the current chancellor Sebastián Kurz (VP) returns to speak of a “resurrection”. After the outbreak of the crown pandemic and the associated massive restrictions, “hope and optimism” are now appropriate, as Kurz wants to convey in his speech today to celebrate the Republic’s anniversary.

The ceremony, of course, should be less than planned. Although the main government and later Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will traditionally place wreaths on the castle gate, the accompanying music from the Federal Army Guard will no longer be available this year. Instead, a quartet from the Vienna Philharmonic will perform at the Chancellery, after which Kurz will address the population and the ceremony will be broadcast live.

At the beginning of the year 76, Kurz wants to “open a new chapter” for the country, after the phase of “resignation, deprivation and loneliness that required a lot”, now the path of return will begin. In summary, the central message: the government would do everything possible “to quickly get people to work in the short term and unemployment back to full employment.”

The President of the Second National Council, Doris Bures (SP), also spoke on the occasion of the anniversary with a vote of approval and a call for cohesion. “We are facing one of the best tests of the Second Republic. History tells us that we can overcome this crisis with cohesion and solidarity,” he said.

The gratitude belongs, according to Bures, “to the generations before us”, now we must work together in the reconstruction. The rule of law must not be forgotten: “The basic pillars of democracy, the separation of powers, the rule of law and fundamental rights and freedom are not a matter of routine, but must be defended on a daily basis,” Bures warned. , especially in the current crisis.
