For more than a month, hospitals were only allowed to carry out medically urgent interventions and treatments by order of the federal government. Starting Monday, April 27, this restriction will be lifted. At Wattwil and Wil Hospitals, the full range of medical and therapeutic offerings from all specialty areas is again available to patients, both outpatient and inpatient. The only exception is group therapy and courses. “We are happy with this decision of the Federal Council. Many patients have had to wait for their treatment or therapy in recent weeks, “says René Fiechter, CEO of the Fürstenland Toggenburg Hospital Region (SRFT).

Spatial separation for protection

However, the two hospitals will not return to normal operation. In addition to routine hospital operation, patients in the Fürstenland Toggenburg region continue to be treated with or suspected of being infected with the coronavirus. Measures are still in place at the national level to minimize the spread of the virus. For its part, the SRFT has taken several precautions to protect both patients and employees as much as possible from infection. In addition to hygiene measures, the spatial separation of different patients is an important element of the concept of protection.

In the pre-triage at the central entrance, all patients are checked for symptoms and asked about their general state of health. Different patient flows are routed through hospitals separately, depending on destination. Patients with confirmed or suspected coronavirus infection are treated or hospitalized in specially designed spatially isolated isolation areas.

Hygiene rules and masks.

Furthermore, distance and hygiene rules also apply in hospitals. When distance rules cannot be followed due to treatment, employees who come in contact with the patient wear a protective mask to protect patients. Patients also receive a mask when they enter the hospital. Additional protective materials are used in the isolation areas. In addition, the ban on visiting hospitals continues to apply, so that, with some exceptions, only patients and employees are in the hospital.

Also ready for another climb

Thanks to these measures, the SRFT is considered well prepared to be able to treat patients in relation to the crown pandemic, as well as all other patients. In recent weeks, the number of coronavirus patients in the two hospitals has been kept at a “pleasantly low level.” However, nothing is left to chance. “In view of uncertain development, the SRFT is also poised to quickly make the required capacities available again if the number of patients increases rapidly,” says René Fiechter.
