American actress Shirley Knight, who was twice nominated for an Oscar in the 1960s, is dead. Knight was 83 years old.
With a supporting role in the drama “Darkness at the End of the Stairs” (1960), the young actress earned her first Oscar nomination. The second followed with Paul Newman in the Tennessee Williams film adaptation of “Sweet Bird Youth” (1962). Knight was empty-handed both times, but she became known as a character actress in Hollywood. Francis Ford Coppola brought her in 1969 for “Love Never a Stranger” with James Caan.
In 1976 he won a Tony Theater Award for “Kennedy’s Children” and three Emmy trophies for television roles, including “Desperate Houswives”. She has also appeared in films such as “There Is Nothing Better”, “The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisters” and “The Cop Department Store”.
