On the sidelines of a press meeting, Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) announced an increase in police checks on crown protection measures at key points such as the Danube Canal. People would not understand that, for one thing, they are not allowed to reunite with their families during the Easter holidays if there are crowds of people in other places at the same time, Ludwig says.
At the same time, the city chief voiced open criticism of the federal government. Given the current situation, he feels the discontent of the population, but it makes no sense to divert that discontent to the EU or the federal states. They have always supported all measures taken by the federal government, even against the will of the population.
When asked if he would recommend stricter measures like the Easter closure in the east to other federal states, Ludwig said he was not recommending anything to anyone. It is important to work together across partisan lines, but ultimately the federal government is accountable and has the opportunity to implement tougher measures.
