On Thursday, the match between Scotland and Austria was scheduled in qualifying group F for the World Cup. In a weak game he disappointed the ÖFB team and in the end did not go beyond a 2-2 draw. A result against honest hosts, which in the end can be classified as “performance-based”.

Sports action on the lawn can be cut to the chase. In a game at an extremely manageable level, Austria were the best, but actually a largely harmless team. More than a good shot from Kalajdzic (2nd) and a conclusion from the conspicuous Baumgartner (18th) were not in the “slip of the event” for the ÖFB selection. The extremely serious Scots actually only had one noteworthy opportunity and this one benefited from a gift. After a blackout by goalkeeper Schlager, the ball lands on Christie, but he misses with his misplaced shot at the Austrian goalkeeper. After a largely disappointing first 46 minutes, the break was 0-0.

After the break, little changed over the course of the game. Austria had more party. But the poor quality of passing and running ensured that the game continued in vogue. But then came the 55th minute. A long-range shot from Grillitsch allowed Scottish goalkeeper Gordon to bounce forward. Kalajdzic captured the situation ideally and scored the 0-1 lead. The first goal in no way ensured calm and stability. On the contrary! Just seconds later, Ilsanker held onto Christie in his own penalty area. In this situation, the ÖFB team was very lucky. Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande let the game continue. A catastrophic wrong decision! By the way, there is no VAR in the World Cup qualification. This situation stimulated the Scots and had two doors through Armstrong. Nothing more and nothing less! In the 58th minute, the guests applauded for the alleged 0: 2. Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande called a foul on the Kalajdzic striker. Justifiable! So the game overflowed. Until minute 71 when Scotland managed to equalize. In a free kick foul, the rear of the ÖFB wants to “defend high”. However, this has not been discussed with everyone. Goalkeeper Schlager sticks to the line and Hanley makes the weak Ilsanker look awful and draws it 1-1. This was by no means undeserved. Nine minutes later, the ÖFB team fought back. After a cross from Lainer, Kalajdzic headed the ball into the net to make it 1: 2. Five more minutes later, the hosts managed to equalize again. McGinn connected the final score of 2-2 with a kick from above.

A result that was good in the end. In a low-level game, the ÖFB team lost practically all its advantages. It was touched, once again, slowly and very imprecisely. In addition, there were errors on defense, which sooner or later have to lead to conceded goals. The fact is, the ÖFB selection inadvertently awarded two points to extremely serious Scots – and these could be important in the end! On the other hand, the hosts were limited and offensively harmless. But due to the missed penalty and the two goals scored, it is by no means possible to speak of a victory by points of luck. However, it is also a fact that the Scots should improve significantly in the subsequent course of qualifying for the World Cup.
