Chancellor Kurz wants to correct the previous distribution of vaccines in the EU.
Brussels. The virtual meeting of EU heads of state will become the vaccination summit today and tomorrow. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is fighting together with the five Eastern European countries, Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic, for a new distribution of the CoV vaccine within the EU. Above all, an additional ten million cans promised by manufacturer Biontech-Pfizer for the second quarter will be distributed more fairly than before. The president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had also spoken in favor of compensation.
Individual countries at a disadvantage when it comes to vaccines
Kurz has long been critical of the current vaccine distribution practice. So far, it has not been carried out as agreed using the per capita key of individual countries. Countries like Austria have been disadvantaged.
Germany, in particular, rejects the demand for a correction. Secretary of State for Europe Michael Roth said countries like Austria had not exhausted the vaccine quotas to which they were entitled. “I don’t see any way to build a conflict that needs to heal from this,” Roth said.
