The third study by durchblicker on the crown’s income situation shows a renewed deterioration in the financial situation

- According to the new durchblicker survey, 38 percent of households are struggling with financial losses due to the crown crisis.
- 17 percent of affected households are no longer able to cover fixed costs, around 500,000 more than in October 2020.

Vienna, March 18, 2021. Austrian households are still under heavy financial pressure due to the Corona crisis and a year after the first shutdown. The situation has worsened since the beginning of the year. This is the result of a survey on net household income that durchblicker, Austria’s largest rate comparison portal, has carried out for the third time. It shows that this has decreased in 38 percent of households in the last twelve months. For comparison: in April 2020 this was 43 percent, in October 2020 36 percent. At 53 percent, households that earn their income from self-employment are particularly hard hit by losses. 1,200 Austrians participated in the representative survey [1] disputed.
It also shows that in Burgenland (52 percent), Salzburg (51 percent) and Tirol (45 percent) a particularly large number of households are feeling the effects of a drop in income. Those in Vorarlberg, Carinthia and Styria, where almost one in three households (31 or 30 percent) have to get by with fewer financial resources, came out a bit more lightly. Household size also plays a role: while 34 percent of single households have to accept a reduction in income, 42 percent of families with children do.
Reinhold Baudisch, founder and CEO of durchblicker: “With the third edition of our study, the panorama is consolidated. Although the big drop in household income came in the wake of the first lockdown from March to May 2020, there has been no recovery since then. On the contrary, 45 per cent of the affected households perceived a further reduction in February 2021, and almost every second in January 2021. The losses are still considerable: on average, households have 639 euros less available per month; if the income is generated through self-employment, this decrease even increases to 991 euros ”.
In almost every second home affected (49 percent), the transition to part-time work is the reason for the worsening income situation, 22 percent cite dismissal and 16 percent cite a decrease in employment as the cause. rotation of self-employment.
Household income is no longer sufficient
The difficult financial situation has dramatic consequences: according to the durchblicker survey, 17 percent of households can no longer cover their fixed costs with their reduced income. Here the situation has worsened: in October it was only 4 percent, which means that about 500,000 more households have been in trouble since then. The loss of family income has a particularly strong impact in this area, as current income is the means of choice to cover fixed costs in 95 percent of households.
Households in Tyrol (26 per cent) and Salzburg (21 per cent) are under the greatest pressure in this regard. Households in Burgenland and Vorarlberg get along better, of which 10 and 12 percent, respectively, can no longer get by on reduced incomes.
Cost optimization is booming, especially in the east of the country
Baudisch: “The situation has drastically worsened since October: around 500,000 [2] other households find it difficult to cover their fixed costs. To increase their financial margin, households must act, and many are already doing it in an impressive way: around two-thirds of those affected have optimized or reduced their fixed costs. For family households with children, this applies even to 71 percent. After all, fixed costs are the category of expenses in which you can save immediately by comparing and changing providers, without having to compromise on living standards. ” In October, significantly fewer people said this, only about 13 percent saw it as a reason to do so.
Focus on mobile communications, insurance and the Internet
The areas of mobile communications (67 percent of households), insurance (59 percent) and residential Internet (53 percent) were optimized or reduced. At the lower end of the scale are the items for rent (10 percent), gas (18 percent), and finance (45 percent). However, despite the optimization steps, the majority of households affected by income losses (76 percent) feel obliged to partially give up consumption.
37 percent of households that have not yet optimized their fixed costs stated that the reason for this was that optimization would not result in very high savings. However, this does not stand up to the facts. In fact, you can save up to 2,650 euros a year on insurance, finances, telephone, internet, electricity or gas. An even larger proportion “don’t know how to optimize fixed costs” (56 percent).
