Contrary to the European trend, Austria sticks to it. vaccination with Astra Zeneca. The World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends the use of the corona vaccine on Wednesday for now.
AUSTRIA. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) wants to make an evaluation of the possible risks and the subsequent use of the vaccine tomorrow, Thursday. The vaccine has been temporarily suspended in several EU countries due to complications with blood clots. In Austria, the experts of the National Vaccination Committee are again in favor of continuing vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine. With one exception: the use of anticoagulant drugs such as acetylsalicylic acid or low molecular weight heparin “is expressly discouraged by COVID-19 vaccination,” as reported by the vaccination panel in a statement.
The vaccination committee also explains that in the “temporary connection with COVID-19 vaccines”, thromboembolic events were observed in “very rare cases”. It still cannot be ruled out that there is a “causal connection” here. In any case, bleeding disorders would often be seen in the case of Covid 19 disease. However, blood clots could also occur spontaneously regardless of this, according to the current statement.
Majority for vaccination stop
Is the Astra Zeneca vaccine safe now? RMA readers voted on this in a poll on mein district.at. The majority (43.69 percent) believe that this vaccine should no longer be used in Austria for the time being. Almost a quarter (23.21 percent) are no longer sure if the Astra-Zeneca vaccine is safe after reports of illness after vaccination. About 20 percent said, “I have no worries and I would be vaccinated.” 12.6 percent in general do not want to be vaccinated. Almost one percent don’t care about the issue.
A similar number of bleeding disorders with other vaccines.
Until now, bleeding disorders after vaccination have not been statistically significantly different from those in the population that has not yet received a vaccine. The numbers are “much lower than would naturally be expected in the general population,” said British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. Also, they are similar to the other approved Covid-19 vaccines.
WHO recommends increased use of the vaccine for now
The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to recommend the use of AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine on Wednesday for now. “WHO is of the opinion that the benefits outweigh the risks,” the organization said in Geneva. The WHO emphasized on Wednesday that vaccination against Covid-19 would not reduce illness or death from other causes. Thrombosis (blood clots) occurred frequently. “Venous thromboembolism is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases in the world,” said the WHO. It is routine to register and investigate possible incidents during vaccination campaigns. This shows that the surveillance systems are working.
WHO is in constant contact with the European Medicines Agency EMA and other regulatory authorities on the safety of Covid-19 vaccines. The Vaccine Council, which advises WHO on vaccine safety, is reviewing all available studies and information. As soon as this is completed, WHO will report back.
Decision of the EMA decisive for the vaccination plan
The EMA has recently made it clear that it has confidence in AstraZeneca, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Wednesday. The manufacturer is relevant because it constitutes almost half of the vaccine that the EU will receive for the summer. If the EMA’s decision turns out as expected, this means that all Austrians can be offered a vaccine for the summer, Kurz said.
