The first coronavirus lockdown started in Austria exactly one year ago.

On March 16, 2020, exactly one year ago, the first lockdown began in Austria to contain the coronavirus pandemic with exit restrictions and the closure of shops without urgent need, restaurants and cultural establishments. To date, there have been fewer than 200 new infections and five deaths.
The first “hard” block had a clear impact. As of March 27, the number of new infections each day rose to just over 1,000 cases, only to then drop rapidly. In mid-April, measurements were relaxed for the first time, and by early July, the number of positive tests per day was below 100. After that, the number rose to 9,586 new infections on November 13 and in the fall. and winter there were ups and downs. with “light” closures, again tougher measures and eventual flexibilities. From the start of vaccination towards the turn of the year, the government has been on a test campaign across the country. However, in addition to the number of infections, hospitalizations have also increased significantly in recent times.
Meanwhile, with 8,892 deaths, almost a thousandth of around 8.9 million inhabitants in Austria have died from the virus, and almost 500,000 have been infected.
