SPÖ and FPÖ see the blame for the vaccination chaos in Kurz

Since the summer of 2020, the procurement of vaccines has been a topic in the Cabinet at least nine times, Kucher referred to the relevant protocols. “Either the Chancellor slept in the meetings of his Council of Ministers, or he has deliberately told us the falsehood in recent days.”

It was Kurz’s ÖVP’s own finance minister, Gernot Blümel, who wanted to save on vaccines, of all things. At least that’s how Kucher interprets the € 200 million upper cost limit for vaccines set on September 15, 2020.

It was only in January that Austria realized it had gone for the wrong, slower and cheaper horse when it came to vaccines, according to the SPÖ. In February, the budget for the risk portfolio of 30.5 million cans was set at 388.3 million euros. Already at that time it was noted that, according to preliminary contracts, all unused cans can be resold or donated.

Kuchers conclusion: “The failure around the vaccination chaos in Austria therefore has a three-letter address: ÖVP! Chancellor’s attempts to patch are increasingly turning into a turquoise own goal.”
