AUSTRIA has put together the best excerpts from Oprah’s (CBS) interview with Harry and Meghan.
Meghan at her secret wedding
- Meghan: No one knows, but we were secretly married three days before our big wedding. We called the archbishop and said, “Look, this is going to be a show for everyone, but we want a private association just for us.”
Tears dispute between Meghan and Kate
Oprah: What’s true about the story that you made Duchess Kate cry a few days before the wedding?
- Meghan: In truth, that never happened. The opposite happened. A few days before the wedding, Kate was upset about a flower girl and it hurt my feelings. Made me cry. But Kate is a good person, she apologized and brought me flowers. Still, it was a turning point for me.
Talk about the child’s skin color.
- Meghan: In the last months of my pregnancy, I was told that our son would not be a prince or a princess. And that meant that our son would not have any security.
Oprah: Was that because of her race?
- Meghan: I will give an honest answer. In the months that I was pregnant I learned that you do not get title or security and that you are afraid of how dark your skin would be.
Oprah: Who had these conversations with you?
- Meghan: There was some conversation on the subject.
Oprah: But won’t you tell me who told you about it?
- Meghan: That would be very, very harmful to that person.
Meghan: “I didn’t want to be alive anymore”
- Meghan: I didn’t see a solution. I was up all night, crying. I know how bad it was for Harry. But he had to tell him: he no longer wanted to be alive. It was a clear, real, and terrifying thought that didn’t leave me. I still remember Harry hugging me after I told him.
Oprah: So you wanted to hurt yourself? Have you had suicidal thoughts?
- Meghan: Yes, that was very, very clear. I say this in public because there are many people who are afraid to speak up for help.
Meghan shared a blanket with the Queen
- Meghan: I loved being with the queen. I remember a special episode: we were in the car, she gave me beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace. She was sitting with a blanket over her lap. It was cold. Then he also covered my legs and said, “Meghan, come on!”
About Meghan and Harry’s second child
The solo interview with Meghan is over. Harry joins them.
Oprah: Now for the next offspring. Will it be a boy or a girl?
- Harry: It’s a girl. I am so thankful for that. First we have a boy, now a girl is coming, what more could you ask for? Now we have our family: the four of us and our two dogs, it’s perfect.
Oprah: Is that it? Two kids and out?
On repeating the story of Lady Diana
Harry becomes very thoughtful. He tells of his concern that a tragedy such as the death of his mother (a car accident when he was followed by paparazzi in Paris) could be repeated.
- Harry: This is my main concern. And I already saw that many things were repeated and became even more dangerous.
Oprah: I want to understand: did you move through the media in Britain or because there was very little support in “the company” (as the British call royalty)?
Harry on Prince Charles
- Harry: When we were in Canada, I had three conversations with my grandmother (note: Queen Elizabeth) and two with my father. Then he said, “Can’t you just write what your plan for the future is?” He didn’t reply after that.
Oprah: Why did he stop talking to you?
- Harry: It is very sad that it has come to this. But I had to do it for my sanity. And for my wife and my son (Archie).
Money cares and takes care of Netflix and Spotify
- Harry: These streaming services were never part of the plan.
- Meghan: We had no plans.
- Harry: When my family cut us off financially, they proposed these contracts to us. I had to say that we needed money to keep the family safe.
Oprah: Wait a minute, the family didn’t give you anything anymore?
- Harry: At the beginning of 2020 it was like that. I am fortunate that my mother (Note: Lady Diana) left me. Without that we would not have made it.
Harry’s relationship with his family
- Harry: In the past year I have spoken with my grandmother more often than in the past. We also had a couple of Zoom conversations with Archie. It’s a good relationship.
Oprah: And with your father, does he take your calls?
- Harry: Yes he does. But it took a lot of work. I was very disappointed because he went through something similar. Still, I will always love him. It is one of my priorities: to repair that relationship.
Oprah: How is your relationship with your brother William?
- Harry: We went through hell after our mother died. Love it. But we wander different paths through life.
Meghan regrets believing in royalty
- Meghan: I really regret one thing. I believed them that I was protected by them. I should have seen that it was not so. But now we have escaped. We have not only survived, we are thriving.
