The Austrian duo, who entered the cross-country track as second after jumping just behind Japan, relegated Norwegian team Espen Andersen and Jarl Magnus Riiber to second place by 39.6 seconds after a sovereign performance in ten laps of more than 1.5 km each. Germans Fabian Rießle and Eric Frenzel, the latter ahead of Japan’s Akito Watabe in the final sprint, finished 1: 07.4 minutes behind the new world champions.

“It’s just amazing, today was a great day again. We were able to show our best performance, what we can do, ”Lamparter, 19, said in an interview with ORF. “Everything went well today: we both had a big jump, a crazy race, and we also had huge skis. On a day like this, everything has to be fine, then you can call yourself a world champion, “says Lamparter,” for that we are working all the time, now we have been rewarded for the hard training. And being able to share the gold medal is the best there is. “

Jumping paves the way to the title

As with his individual world championship title on the big hill, Lamparter laid the foundation for the possible precious metal on the hill. The 19-year-old showed the longest jump in the competition with 140.5 meters. Encouraged by his teammate, his Tyrolean compatriot Greiderer also held to the height of 133.0 meters on the Schattenbergschanze and thus kept the Austrians’ golden opportunity.

Just two seconds behind the Japanese rider Ryota Yamamoto, Lamparter hit the cross-country ski trail and left his competitors behind on his second lap. As a result, Greiderer also didn’t let his pursuers get any closer. “It was incredibly hard, very slow. I took it all out. And back to back it became clearer that the Norwegians, Germans and Japanese cannot catch up. I hit everything, they burned my legs, ”said Greiderer, tired but beaming.

The 27-year-old Greiderer also struggled with nerves at the prospect of the world champion title. “I was nervous today from morning until the last lap when we were still half a minute ahead and I knew it would go well. I had to concentrate very hard not to stumble or fall on the deep descents. No later than 50 meters from the finish line, it was clear that it would work. I still don’t believe it, ”said the Tyrolean.

With a single gold in his pocket, Lamparter seemed to be taking it easy. “It is not easier to be a world champion, but of course I was able to take my self-confidence. But of course I still have to do my thing, “said the 19-year-old, who also won gold at the World Junior Championships in Lahti this year:” I was able to do a great job on the hill again. And we were both very, very strong along the way. Today they couldn’t be caught, ”Lamparter said.

ÖSV Gold Quarter in Oberstdorf

With their triumph, the two Tyrolese won the first gold medal in the team sprint, held for the first time at a World Cup in 2013, and thus also completed a set of red-white-red medals. At the premiere eight years ago, Wilhelm Denifl and Bernhard Gruber won silver, and in 2019 at the World Cup at home in Seefeld, Franz-Josef Rehrl and Gruber won bronze.

For the combined athletes it was also the third medal in Oberstdorf: Lamparter had already won the gold in the singles on the big hill on Thursday and before that, together with Greiderer, Lukas Klapfer and Mario Seidl, bronze in the team competition. For the Austrian World Cup team, the triumph in the combined team sprint was already the fourth gold medal in the Allgäu title fights.
