It wouldn’t have been impossible for Salzburg to catch up with Villarreal in the Europa League, but the Austrian champions literally got in their own way with 1: 2 and were eliminated in the 16th final.
The return leg started so promisingly after a 2-0 draw at home a week ago: Salzburg took the lead thanks to Berisha (17th). Goalkeeper Rulli had played Pau Torres carelessly, Daka captured the ball and sent the German out in the middle.
Salzburg tried to improve: Daka’s shot went over the goal (17th), the forward’s shot into the side net (21st).
With Villarreal’s first attack, however, it was 1: 1 because the Salzburg defense was clumsy: Gerard Moreno, double assists in the first leg, made a hook on the right wing, the attacking goalkeeper Stankovic surrounded Junuzovic and made the free throw (41).
Withdrawn penalty
It was an effective hit. Referee Zwayer gave hope again when he called a penalty for Salzburg, but because the ball jumped from his own heel into Capoue’s arm, the German rightly recovered the decision, according to the images (60 °).
Sucic missed the opportunity for an exciting final phase (77th); then a new misunderstanding between Junuzovic and Stankovic even cost him the contribution to the five-year standings: Junuzovic played a back pass to the goalkeeper, Stankovic bypassed Gerard Moreno and knocked him down. The foul converted the penalty – 1: 2 (89th). As in the previous season, the trip from Salzburg to Europe ended in the sixteenth final.
