Sales in the Viennese hotel industry plummeted 76.6 percent in the previous year. The misery continued at the beginning of the year.

As expected, overnight net sales of Vienna accommodation providers fell in 2020. The corona pandemic caused a 76.6 percent decline to 239 million euros. Vienna Tourism announced this on Tuesday. Now the December numbers have also been evaluated, and they are also deep red. Sales fell 93.3 percent to 7.8 million euros.

The number of overnight stays has already been determined for January 2021, when leisure tourism was no longer possible due to the blockade: 58,000 overnight stays represent a decrease of 94.9 percent compared to the same month last year. Most of the guests were from Austria, unsurprisingly. The average occupancy of hotel beds was 4.6 percent in January (1/2020: 46.9 percent), that of rooms around 6 percent (1/2020: about 61 percent).

Naturally, the number of open companies has also dropped dramatically. According to Wien Tourismus, only around 32,000 hotel beds were available in Vienna in January. A year ago it was more than double.
