The Biathlon World Championship in Pokljuka (SLO) 2021 is history. In the final men’s mass start race he showed Simon Eder another great performance. The 37-year-old stayed in first place throughout the race, only had to accept a penalty loop and finished in a strong fourth place (23.1 seconds).
Especially at the beginning of the race, the man from Salzburg put on an excellent performance. After three flawless shots, Sturla Holm Laegreid from Norway and Slovenian Jakov Fak made it to the last stage on their feet. In an exciting showdown, the three athletes had to enter the penalty circuit with a miss, suddenly both the French Quentin Fillon Maillet and the Norwegian Johannes Dale returned to the medal standings. As Sturla Holm Laegreid ran confidently towards her fourth gold medal at Pokljuka, Simon Eder was fully involved in the fight for a medal. In the end, the 37-year-old narrowly missed the bronze medal in a dramatic final round and finished fourth (+23.1 seconds).
Behind Sturla Holm Laegreid, his compatriot Johannes Dale took silver (10.2 seconds). The bronze medal went to Quentin Fillon Maillet (+12.8 seconds) from France.
Simon Eder (fourth): “I think on a day like today when Lisa Hauser won the gold medal, we can get over fourth place. Today was a historic day for the Austrian biathlon sport. From the third lap I realized that I could keep up because I was not yet at my limit. Then I felt my opportunity, but unfortunately luck was not on my side in my last shot with a small mistake. She wasn’t even nervous because mentally she was in a good mood. Of course, it is a pity that they both appeared in the last lap, one would have been enough for me. ”
