Kurz doesn’t rule out March openings

The Chancellor met with representatives of the catering, leisure and tourism sectors. All industry representatives are now for the entrance tests.

On Friday, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) no longer ruled out restaurant openings in March. Previously, the government had only planned additional easing measures on Tuesday for “around Easter” at the earliest. The Chamber of Commerce is pressing urgently for relief despite the growing number of corona infections.

As already announced, the government wants to consult with experts and the federal states on the opening steps on March 1 and “hopefully implement them in March”, as Kurz said on Friday after consultations with industry representatives from the sectors of restoration, leisure and tourism. However, decisions depend on the subsequent infection process, as restricted by the Chancellor. “If these increase sharply, the openings don’t make sense,” says Kurz.

“The tide has turned” in the entrance tests

A “maybe earlier opening” has moved into the realm of possibilities because the hosts are no longer against the entry test. “The tide has turned,” Kurz said, all industry representatives are in favor of the entry testing system, which allows more freedom in the pandemic. The testing concept worked well for hairdressers and other body hugging service providers.
