The answers to this are quite different, depending on what political party lens you are looking at. A sober approach would do everything right. Using the example of Mrs. Martina Kurz, for example. She is the former member of the supervisory board of the Novomatic gaming group who plays a significant role in this case. The Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) knew before the house search in Gernot Blümel that the entry “Kurz” in the calendar of the founder of Novomatic, Johann Graf, could affect this woman, who is also his daughter-in-law, but not. I consider probable.
The reason on file: There were no more entries with “short” in the calendar. So it could only mean the Federal Chancellor. That fits best with the investigation into possible illegal party donations to the ÖVP. And the text message from former Novomatic boss Harald Neumann to Blümel, asking for a date with Sebastian Kurz.
This image had already been solidified in the WKStA the previous year: the application for a house registration with the Ministry of Finance had already been approved by a judge before Christmas. Everything was implemented much later, on February 11. And in those seven weeks the prosecutor did not find time
to contact Ms. Martina Kurz and ask if she met Johann Graf on July 25, 2017 at 1pm or not. With an affidavit, Martina Kurz now confirmed the appointment with her father-in-law and left the WKStA with many explanations.
It can hardly be believed that a text message and a name conundrum are enough to bring in a minister as a suspect and order a house search. Therefore, it is quite possible that prosecutors have more up their sleeve, but do not want to come out just yet. Otherwise, if the result is still as poor as in the case of the home search carried out by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, then the WKStA can no longer be placed under a cover of glass and declared sacrosanct. So we must demand transparency and consequences from this side, as is postulated – rightly – for the politics of all sides.
