The new German border regime is causing irritation in relation to Austria. The sound becomes audibly harsher.

On an autumn day in 2019, shots were fired in front of the Austrian embassy in Berlin. The Riflemen of St. Johann in Tirol opened the national holiday reception with a tradition. Then a friendly atmosphere prevailed in the embassy. Those who wanted had been forced to put on the disguise. There was the Tyrolean bacon and the Tyrolean self-market. Country representatives beat the drum for the alpine vacation paradise, whose most important foreign guest is the German.

The reception was less than a year and a half ago, but it felt like forever. Meanwhile, tourism in Tyrol has dropped. And since midnight on Sunday, the border with Germany has been de facto closed for the vast majority of Tyrolese. Like the Czech Republic, Germany had also classified the Austrian state as a virus variant area, which in many cases makes entry from Tyrol impossible for Austrians without a German residence. Germany has reduced its incidence from seven days to 58.9 (Austria: 110). The South African mutant in the valleys of Tyrol shouldn’t ruin partial success.
