Hoyos / Krisper: “The state security that the ÖVP had ruined over the years was blind, deaf and incompetent. The terrorist attack could have been prevented. Nehammer has to resign. “
Vienna (OTS) – “The relentless analysis of the Zerbes Commission shows the disastrous state of state security,” thus the reaction of NEOS defense spokeswoman Douglas Hoyos and NEOS security spokeswoman Stephanie Krisper. It was “overdue danger.” What is needed now is “a radical reorganization of the protection of the constitution, with the introduction of rigorous parliamentary scrutiny.”
Hoyos: “A short-staffed BVT, overwhelmed and run over by the ÖVP as a political-partisan playing field for supply posts could not prevent the November 2 attack. The final report clearly shows that the state security service was blind, deaf and incompetent and that the ÖVP is responsible for that. ” That at the time of the attack there was no current analysis of Islamist extremism in Austria, that BVT and LVT did. Without knowing what the other was doing, show the organizational guilt of gross negligence of the department leadership. “These scandalous findings will probably also be reflected in the official liability litigation against the republic that the victims of the attack have already initiated,” Hoyos is convinced.
Nehammer is ready to retire
Interior Minister Nehammer, according to the NEOS defense spokesman, only cares about saving his own skin. He is not interested in clarification: “But when the going gets tough, as is the case with the crown pandemic or terrorist attacks, dilettantism and the cover-up of one’s own ineptitude are sadly quickly fatal.” Nehammer has already responded to a parliamentary inquiry. information on their level of knowledge prior to the terrorist attack, with reference to the Commission’s report, which had also found walls here. “It is important to clarify personal responsibility. In any case, our confidence that former ÖVP Secretary General Karl Nehammer would seriously rehabilitate BVT for the sake of the country’s security is gone. A minister of the Interior who is only interested in covering up is no longer acceptable and has to leave his place, ”Hoyos says.
The fact that the Commission had “obstacles” in the way of its work also required careful examination. “We will question the commission in the subcommittee of the Interior Commission, which we demand that it be convened immediately.”
BAT reform and parliamentary scrutiny
NEOS security spokeswoman Stephanie Krisper calls once again for a radical reorganization of the BVT: “The conditions of the organizational and personal framework must be created immediately so that Austria can regain the state protection that it deserves and in which the partners international can trust again. We need a BVT that focuses on protecting the state and its institutions and not on the interests of the Popular Party. “
For Krisper it is clear that the reorganization of the BVT must go hand in hand with the implementation of rigorous parliamentary control: “The fact that we are facing this pile of broken glass today is also due to the fact that State security has so far been de facto removed from parliamentary scrutiny. The ‘Black Box BVT’ must finally be thrown out, at least for the secret subcommittee responsible for the Homeland Committee. Control creates prevention, control creates clarification, control creates legitimacy ”. In December, the opposition parties NEOS, SPÖ and FPÖ submitted the corresponding application package to the National Council. “But the ÖVP has not yet shown the will to speak in this direction.”
The anti-terror package is simply a lost issue
According to Krisper, the “anti-terror package” drawn up by the federal government turned out to be a simple miscommunication, especially in light of the UKO report’s findings: “The problem was not the missing crimes: the keyword ‘Political Islam ‘- and symbolic laws. The problem was and is the organizational ruin of BVT and cannot be redeveloped with a paragraph in the penal code. “
