Overall World Cup winner Katrin Beierl failed to achieve a World Cup medal in the two-man bobsleigh. Lower Austria had to be content with pusher Jennifer Onasanya finishing seventh on Saturday at Altenberg, after four races was almost a second off bronze. In the men’s two, Benjamin Maier fell in the second heat and fell again desperately until the end of the intermediate classification.
Maier will no longer compete in the remaining two races on Sunday. Markus Treichl and Sebastian Mitterer are 14th intermediate in two. Top seed Francesco Friedrich of Germany secured the top lead at half time. The World Cup decision in the quartet will follow next week.
“Unfortunately a handling error”
Maier and pusher Markus Sammer, who were not in the top peloton in the first round, were unharmed in their fall. “I got to the top badly and then he took Bob down. Unfortunately, that was a one-time handling error. Fortunately, we both came out unscathed, we will analyze everything carefully and then focus on the four-person competition next weekend, “said Maier.
As in the previous year, the gold in women went to the American Kaillie Humphries, who won ahead of the Germans Kim Kalicki and Laura Nolte. Beierl was still fifth after the first day, but fell back a bit in the last two races. In the previous year, zip lining by choice also ranked ninth at the Altenberg World Cup, and in 2019 in Whistler it was fourth.
