Despite the turbulent times, many people in the Freistadt district have dared to take the step of self-employment. The previous year, 231 new companies were founded. That is a new record.

FREISTADT DISTRICT. In 2020, 231 companies were founded in the Freistadt district. Including 13 company acquisitions, 244 new companies were registered with the Free City Chamber of Commerce (WKO). “In this pandemic, we are experiencing an even stronger trend towards business start-ups,” said Christian Naderer, President of WKO Freistadt.

Corona was the impetus for change

In a massive global crisis, one would at first expect more waiting and fewer startups. In times of turmoil, new opportunities and business models also open up. “Committed people now have the opportunity and time to rethink their life model and polish new ideas. Often times the momentum for entrepreneurship simmers for a long time, now many are getting the final jolt, ”says Christian Naderer.

105 new commercial and artisan businesses

Most of the startups, specifically 105, were in the trade and crafts sector. 76 companies were founded in the commercial sector (76), 34 in the information and consulting sector. In the tourism and leisure sector, ten companies were founded the previous year, five in transport and traffic and a new industrial company was founded in the region.

The many part-time startups (30) in the direct selling arena are striking. Business / Accounting / IT Consulting (18), Personal Service Providers (Energy) (15), Foot Care / Cosmetics / Massage (13), Advertising (12), Mail Order (11), Fashion Tech / Clothing (9) and Food retailing were emerging industries (8), professional photographers (8) and carpenters (6) especially strong.

Highest base intensity in Hagenberg and Tragwein

The municipalities of Freistadt (23), Pregarten (21), Tragwein (19) and Hagenberg (18) registered the highest number of business start-ups in absolute numbers. More exciting, however, is the intensity of the startups: measured by the number of inhabitants, Hagenberg ranks before Tragwein, followed by the four alpine communities of Königswiesen, Schönau, St. Leonhard and Kaltenberg.

Most important business idea and planning

“In addition to questions about restrictions and crown support, inquiries about business start-ups are on the rise,” explains Dietmar Wolfsegger, director of WKO Freistadt. “We advise on a daily basis, mainly by phone or in video conferences because of the crown. We are very happy to be able to support and accompany almost all the founders on their path to self-employment.” The key requirement for a successful entrepreneurial career is the business idea that she is “passionate.” The move to self-employment must be intensively prepared and planned, and many also use the WKO start-up workshops for this.
