Mail order companies and their carriers rely on “green” energy in the fight against CO2 emissions, but reject return fees.
An average of 300 grams of CO2 per online purchase
The retail chain Unito (Otto, Universal, Quelle, Lascana, Oko) and its logistics partners Österreichische Post and Gebrüder Weiss emphasize that delivery through online retail has less impact on the environment than freight transport in the stationary retail sales and refer to a study by the German Institute for Clean Technology. According to this, an average of 460 grams of CO2 is generated when an item is purchased in a traditional way, while online consumption generates 300 grams of CO2 and therefore 35 percent less. This is mainly due to the condensed transportation of shipments by logistics service providers who always deliver to multiple customers per trip.
Deliver sustainably
The CoV pandemic has, by necessity, decisively changed shopping behavior: Because you can’t go to a store for weeks due to closures, more and more products are ordered online; more on this at Post AG delivered 25 million packages (5.1.2021). Harald Gutschi, a management spokesman, says there are unprecedented package volumes Unito is shipping from its offices in Graz and Salzburg as a result of the CoV pandemic: In the Christmas business alone, there was a 30 percent increase.
“That is why it is so important not only to deliver these items well, but also to deliver them sustainably. As of January 1, 2021, Unito Group will deliver all shipments in Austria, all shipments in Switzerland and all shipments in Germany without CO2 emissions. We saved 1.5 million kilos of CO2, 1,500 tons of CO2 in our 6.5 million shipments ”, said Gutschi; By 2030, the group is targeting overall climate neutrality.
Position: Parcel delivery project in Graz
As a delivery partner, you have the Post and the international logistics company Gebrüder Weiss on board. The Post’s General Director, Georg Pölzl, referred to the Post’s electronic fleet with more than 2,100 vehicles; all letters and packages have been delivered CO2-free since 2011. To achieve this, reduce heat and fuel consumption, among other things, and buy so-called climate protection certificates.
They are now working on CO2-free letter delivery, said Pölzl: “We have set the same target for parcel delivery, a broad-based project is currently underway in Graz where we can use the right vehicles after delivery of letters. make package delivery CO2-free, so it’s a very clear path ”. – More on this in Graz is testing CO2-free mail delivery (August 26, 2020).
There are also brakemen
The Vorarlberg Gebrüder Weiss put its first hydrogen-powered truck on the road in Switzerland a few days ago. The fact that CO2 is neutral does not mean that the gas that damages the climate is not produced, but that it brings a reduction, along with the purchase of climate certificates. Charging infrastructure and vehicle costs would delay environmentally friendly delivery; On top of that, electric mobility outside the “last mile” is not yet mature enough for heavy truck transportation.
About a quarter of returns
About a quarter of the products ordered online are falling (numbers fluctuate considerably here) with a downward trend. Harald Gutschi attributes this to the fact that products are presented in an increasingly meaningful way, in addition to user opinions and increased environmental awareness. This decline has been observed for ten years and has continued throughout the CoV pandemic.
