Islam law: conflict between Aslan and IGGÖ

The religious educator attacked the IGGÖ, which now wants a statement from the University of Vienna.

Vienna The Islamic Faith Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is “alienated” by Ednan Aslan. The religious educator attacked the IGGÖ head-on in a statement on the bill amending Islamic Law. According to Aslan, it is an instrument of associations controlled from abroad and less committed to the interests of Austrian Muslims. This can also be seen in staff, whose appointments are based less on qualifications and more on association membership.

IGGÖ president Ümit Vural is now demanding a statement from the University of Vienna, because Aslan has written the statement on behalf of the Department of Islamic Religious Education. But, according to Vural, Aslan has not been involved in the IGGÖ for 13 years “and therefore has no knowledge of the conduct and reform process that the IGGÖ has carried out.”

Criticism of the draft

The tightening planned as part of the government’s “anti-terror package” was criticized by lawyers, church representatives and the IGGÖ itself. For example, there is talk of unequal treatment and widespread mistrust of Muslims. (eko)
