The five-star left-wing populist movement, the strongest political force in parliament and in the failed coalition, blamed former prime minister Matteo Renzi and his small left-liberal Italia Viva party for the failure of tough negotiations. Renzi, who caused the crisis of government a good two weeks ago with the withdrawal of his party’s ministers from Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s cabinet, sabotaged the negotiations because he wanted to prevent Conte from taking office again, despite the will of the other. parts of the dialogue, Renzi has a number made for unacceptable demands, said five-star boss Vito Crimi. Among other things, he had demanded key ministries for his party and the removal of several five-star ministers, Crimi complained: “It is obvious that Renzi is not interested in the interests of Italy, but in the ministerial chair.”
Mattarella rejects early elections
For his part, former Prime Minister Renzi listed the most controversial points on social media that led to the breakdown of negotiations. The five stars had stuck to an unacceptable judicial reform, refused to continue building high-speed train connections and access the funds provided by Brussels from the Stability Mechanism (ESM). “We realized that our former coalition partners had vetoed our proposals. Now we entrust ourselves to the wisdom of the president, ”wrote Renzi.
Mattarella reiterated Tuesday night that he rejects the early parliamentary elections in light of the pandemic. Instead, a new government must be formed as soon as possible to carry the country through the state of emergency.
The President of Parliament, Fico de las Cinco Estrellas, who was summoned by Mattarella as a mediator in the talks, had previously announced that there was no majority in the explorations. There was no will to “create a governmental majority.” Mattarella had previously spoken with representatives of the relevant parties to find a way out of the government crisis. With the latest developments, Renzi has achieved his goal of finally ousting his adversary Conte from the prime minister’s office.
