The quartet surprisingly won the team relay competition by 0.038 seconds ahead of Germany. With the hosts, the two-seater Toni Eggert / Sascha Benecken made a mistake in the last round of the World Cup and fell back to silver. Third place went to Latvia.
Olympic champion David Gleirscher was completely happy. Two days after he shared the sprint podium in third place with the world champion and his brother Nico, he also won relay gold after an individual bronze. “Mega, a crazy weekend. The fact that it still ends like this today is of course amazing,” said the Tyrolean joy.
Even for Steu / Koller, who had lost great hope in the two-seater competition, it was a good ending to these championships. “Great, and then on to Königssee, where the Germans usually completely dominate,” added Koller.
For Austria this meant the first team medal at a World Cup since 1999, also in Königssee. The previous three team medals were successful in 1996, 1997, and 1999 in co-ed competition (not yet contested as a relay at the time).
Overall victory of the World Cup
At the Bobsleigh World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls yesterday, Katrin Beierl and her partner Jennifer Onasanya took third place in the World Cup in a two-man overall, a first for Austria in history.
