This is “a breaking of the taboo, a fall of man, a democratic political scandal” and for the first time “direct censorship”. At the same time, Kickl campaigned to participate in a meeting recorded by the FPÖ for Sunday at Heldenplatz, where he and most of the speakers registered for the canceled demo will appear.
Attorney Gerold Beneder did not sit next to Kickl as originally announced on Saturday. Kickl explained at the outset that they did not do it, “so that the impression of political-partisan appropriation is not given.”
And then it turned into a long criticism: tomorrow’s big rally was “banned at the request of the Interior Minister,” said FPÖ club boss, Minister Karl Nehammer and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (both ÖVP) wanted to avoid criticism from “Thousands of people” listen to his approach to Corona – and try to demobilize with a “strategy of intimidation”. Meanwhile, the line is being taken “with extreme harshness” that “criticism of the government is no longer tolerated in this country.” That “does not fit in the least in a democracy,” Kickl said.
The organizers had promised in phone calls and letters to the police that “of course, compliance with the rules of the crown will be observed.” They “even announced it” and got enough masks for all the contestants. The failure of this to be resolved was not due to the Vienna State Police Department, which Kickl, like the police in general, praised, but to the Minister of the Interior.
In his opinion, the reasons for the rejection are not valid, that is, that public health is in danger because, in view of the numerous violations in previous demonstrations, there is a fear of ignoring the requirement of distance and masking. There is no medical evidence that corona infections originated in gatherings, Kickl said. The right of assembly is “constitutionally very strongly guaranteed”, and the fact that a demonstration may pose a risk is not a sufficient argument for a ban. The alleged “alleged infiltration of right-wing extremists” of such anti-crown demonstrations is also not proven, there are no reports, for example, of violating the prohibition law in previous rallies.
