The state warning center Vorarlberg on Friday classified the avalanche danger in the country as great, so the warning level 4 was on the scale of five parts.
The main problem is wet snow in the middle and deep layers. Due to heavy rains and warming, many medium-sized and large wet and sliding snow avalanches are expected. At higher altitudes, the large amount of new and drifting snow, which was prone to breaking, created a tense situation.
Spontaneous avalanches expected
Many spontaneous avalanches are expected. According to avalanche experts, these could also acquire very large dimensions, especially from avalanche sections that have not yet been discharged, and even advance into valleys. Exposed roads and hiking trails are in danger. Individual winter sports enthusiasts could easily trigger avalanches, according to the warning. Dangerous spots are on steep terrain, behind the edges of the terrain, and in ravines and hollows.
Weather forecast
Since Thursday, Vorarlberg has recorded heavy rains, which fell as rain up to an altitude of 1,700 meters. On it was a lot of fresh snow, which was blown away by the stormy wind. During the course of Friday, the resulting snowdrift collections should continue to grow. The experts judged the structure of the snow cover to be unfavorable: new, warm drifting snow lies on a cold layer of old snow, and snowboards could break at this layer boundary. In the lower layers, the rain weakened the snow cover. The avalanche situation will also remain “tense” on Saturday, according to the state warning center.
Arlberg locations temporarily unavailable
Due to the danger of avalanches, the connection between St. Christoph am Arlberg and Stuben or the Lech district of Zürs had to be closed on Friday morning, so Lech was initially not accessible by road. The lock could be lifted at 9:30.
