Green is satisfied with the regulation on the labeling of origin of beef and eggs in community restaurants

Vienna (OTS) Health Minister Rudi Anschober wants to implement origin labeling for beef and eggs in community catering as a first step. “The label of origin strengthens local farmers, regional supply and contributes to environmental and animal well-being. The population is also behind this project, as evidenced by the more than 416,000 signatures of the animal protection referendum, which includes the requirement for identification of origin and breeding. I am very happy for this first step towards greater transparency on the plate, ”says Greens agriculture spokesperson Olga Voglauer.

Food labeling is very strictly regulated by EU law; the greatest room for maneuver exists with unpackaged food as in community catering. Voglauer: “We have been asking for labeling in restaurants for a long time, since a large part of imported meat is used here. It is precisely here that we have the greatest influence to support Austrian small-scale agriculture. ”

Thomas Waitz, EU MEP and co-chair of the European Green Party, adds: “The EU Commission’s field-to-table strategy aims to strengthen regional value creation. To this end, Agriculture Commissioner Wojciechowski also announced yesterday a change in the law in the EU Agriculture Committee to finally introduce origin labeling across Europe. In this regard, Austria can and must take bold first steps towards labeling of origin for all animal products in Community catering and gastronomy. Only then do our consumers have honest information and can make conscious decisions. The step that has been taken today is to support regional production, help animals, the environment and the climate and finally take measures to avoid the transport of animals over long distances. We will continue to fight for a uniform solution at the EU level. “
