The tide can turn so fast!
While a place in the top six seemed utopian a few days ago, Vienna’s Austria laughed a lot after its harsh appearance in the city’s southern blizzard. For the first time this season, the “Veilchen” were able to achieve two wins in a row.
Thanks to the sovereign success in Admira (party report >>>), Peter Stöger’s protégés in the upper half of the table are approaching one point. And while the WAC in sixth place and the chaser St. Pölten in eighth place still have a game up their sleeve, the distribution group is happy with the maximum points at the beginning of spring.
Peter Stöger made it clear to “Sky”: “We had momentum on our side. The 4-0 score is too high in my opinion, but if you look at 90 minutes, we are a deserved winner.”
Handl foiled Stöger’s plan

Central defender Johannes Handl quickly found the main responsible for the victory. Grazer’s workday only started in the 75th minute of the game. When the score was 2-0, he should consolidate the purple defense for the finals and carry the victory over time.
“The coach turned me on so I could keep the cabin safe in the back,” Handl smiles. Instead, however, the 22-year-old appeared three minutes after his substitution in the opposite half to finally close the bag with a long shot to Kreuzeck. With the header to the final score 4-0 he crowned his performance. True to the motto: attack is the best defense.
“No one would have expected him to score two goals later today,” said Handl, celebrating his first Bundesliga goals after 15 appearances.
Will FAK soon be “a working football team”?
Head coach Stöger is visibly pleased with the double packer’s performance. “I think he (Handl, note) has not fully processed the situation yet. That he is so rewarded is good, it is good for all of us,” says Stöger, adding: “When he sees that everyone agrees, he was pleased, then we are on the way to perhaps becoming a kind of working football team. “
If it were up to Georg Teigl, who, like Handl, scored his first goal in the FAK dress, violets can be expected in spring. “Wonderful weather, wonderful performance by the team. It was fun,” is the conclusion of the 29-year-old, who soon after remembers his difficult time in Germany.
“But I have also had a bad time in football. It is not always sunny. I am grateful to have every opportunity to play. The first goal for a new club is always something special. I will stay in this game longer.” But I’m also glad I won, because that’s the most important thing, ”laughs Teigl.
WSG first, then Salzburg twice
So victories as such are balm for Austria’s battered soul. With Ried and Admira, the “Veilchen” were able to score big points. On the one hand, to escape from the basement of the table and on the other, not to lose sight of the master group.
In the next week, the tasks will be much more difficult. The team of the hour will travel to Vienna-Favoriten with WSG Tirol on Sunday, before RB Salzburg is waiting in the ÖFB Cup in early February and then in the Bundesliga.
It remains to be seen whether the Viennese, after the departure of Alon Turgeman and Bright Edomwonyi, will find the desired reinforcement in the attack by then. In an emergency, Handl could also help …
