Nordic pickup
Bernhard Gruber was transferred from the intensive care unit to a normal ward in Lahti on Monday. During a cardiac catheter examination, the Nordic combined athlete received two more stents on Sunday. The 38-year-old Salzburg, who again complained of chest pain after his ten-month comeback at the Lahti World Cup, is doing well according to the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV).
Gruber, among others the former individual world champion in 2015 and Olympic team champion in Vancouver 2010, will now be transferred to Austria on Wednesday or Thursday. However, that won’t be decided until Tuesday. A more detailed update on his health is expected to be available on Wednesday.
The Bad Hofgasteiner had already received the diagnosis of coronary artery narrowing in mid-March 2020 and had a stent placed. Eight months later, after extensive checks, he received medical clearance to practice high-performance sports in early November.
Strong performance in the team sprint
After starting training with the Austrian national team, Gruber started the World Cup season on Saturday in the Lahti team sprint. Along with Mario Seidl, he was surprisingly the first to jump, and was ultimately an excellent sixth place for the duo. After the recent setback in health, the career of the three-time world champion and six-time World Cup winner seems to be over for good.
