Hahnenkamm Race 2021 – Downhill 2: French Clarey, first rider over 40 years old on the World Cup podium: “Feuzbühel”: Beat Feuz achieves double

KITZBÜHEL (han). Two golden chamois, 200 points, regaining the leadership of the Downhill World Cup, € 133,000 in prizes and a gondola that will bear his name in the future – for Beat Feuz, Kitzbühel has become the “Feuzbühel”. After Wengen’s alternate downhill race on Friday, the nearly 34-year-old Swiss also won the “real” downhill classic on Sunday. Feuz was not only crowned a flawless Hahnenkamm winner. With the double win, he also joined the circle of elite ski heroes who won two World Cup races in one Hahnenkamm weekend. Frenchman Luc Alphand did it in 1995, before Austrians Karl Schranz in 1972, Josef Walcher in 1978, Peter Wirnsberger in 1986, Swiss Pirmin Zurbriggen in 1985 and Franz Heinzer in 1992. There were a total of 13 double races on the Streif. . Even before the invention of the World Cup, there were double winners: in 1950 Fritz Huber won both races, a year later Christian Pravda.

French Clarey makes World Cup history
In the middle of the race, Feuz was already 42/100 behind intermediate leader Johan Clarey at Seidlalmsprung. Not least thanks to a daring shot from Hausbergkante, the Swiss increased the gap to 17/100 ahead of the French. Clarey’s second fastest time withstood all attacks and makes skiing history. At 40 years and 16 days old, he is now the oldest athlete to ever reach a podium at the World Cup. The previous record holder was Swede Patrik Järyn at 39 years and 8 months. A happy ending for Clarey, as she fell in final training to 140 km / h after the target jump, but remained unharmed.

Two Carinthians and one Austrian high in the top ten
ÖSV hopes that Matthias Mayer could have finished third (+0.38) on the podium again. The 30-year-old Carinthian had to deal with fog and poor visibility at the top of the road. This weekend, Mayer expanded her majestic “suede backpack” to a total of eight with this year’s trophies in silver and bronze. His compatriot Otmar Striedinger (+1.20) was the second-best Austrian in eighth place, while Daniel Hemetsberger (+1.32), 29, celebrated his best World Cup result in tenth place. Romed Baumann was fifth and lost a podium place by just six tenths. Vincent Kriechmayr had to survive a moment of shock. Upper Austria grabbed onto a gate post at the entrance to the crossing, which crossed both skis for a split second. In contrast to the first descent, the autumn devil was very tame on Sunday. There were no serious falls. Only three of the 52 starters missed the finish line.
