A total of 539 smears were examined. Health Advisor Hacker now wants all positive samples to be checked for mutations in Vienna.
In Vienna, 539 corona positive samples were tested for the presence of the N501Y and Del69 / 70 mutations specific to the British variant B.1.1.7. These could be detected in 66 samples, the city council announced on Friday. Therefore, the proportion is around twelve percent. This shows that B.1.1.7. has arrived in Austria, said Health Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ).
Last week he asked Vice Chancellor Oswald Wagner to have the Vienna Medical University examine positive samples from Vienna for the presence of variant B.1.1.7. “Since no systematic control for the mutation has been carried out in Austria so far, it is unfortunately not possible to say how long this Covid 19 virus mutation has been present in Austria,” said the department head.
According to the broadcast, the examinations were performed at the University at the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine or at the Virology Center. “More research is needed to monitor the future spread of the new B.1.1.7 variant, so we will monitor further development each week,” explained Robert Strassl of the Clinical Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Stephan Aberle of the Center for Virology. . .
“At the moment, we will continuously monitor all positive samples for mutations in various laboratories in Vienna in order to have a corresponding monitoring system available as quickly as possible,” Hacker announced. The results would be available in a “naturally transparent” way.
