The federal government announced that the chains will sell them at cost. This was confirmed by representatives of Spar, Lidl, Hofer and Rewe on Sunday. But it is still open how high the price will be. That depends on the acquisition costs, because it is still being asked. In any case, there will be enough masks.
“As cheap as possible”
Many retail companies already have FFP2 skins in their range, but the price will continue to change. “How the price will look from January 25 will be set in the next few days,” said a spokeswoman for Spar (Spar, Eurospar, Interspar). As a spokesperson for Rewe (Billa, Merkur, Penny) emphasized that the masks would be offered “as cheaply as possible.”
Lidl orders a million masks
“The cost price is still open,” said a spokesman for Lidl. The chain has placed orders for FFP2 skins in the two-digit million range. “We should be able to offer a million masks by the end of next week.”
TO Hofer, the national subsidiary of the German group Aldi Süd, is still in the process of ordering the FFP2 masks. According to the company, they are expected to arrive at the end of the new week. “They will be available to our customers at cost price at our branches. How high it will be has not yet been determined. We are trying to get enough FFP2 masks and will also order additional deliveries if needed,” Hofer said.
Free masks for low-income people
There are different sources of supply, each group has its suppliers. All of them will now be contacted. Setting up large quantities is difficult, but possible, said one industry expert. There are still some imponderables. Cost prices to customers could possibly change over time. As is well known, high demand drives up the price. It is also said that not all requested quantities could be delivered.
According to the federal government, people with low incomes should receive the soon-to-be required masks free of charge. The distribution of these masks should be clarified at the Ministry of Health in the coming days.
