Gregor Schlierenzauer refused to go to the materials check at the Dreikönigsspringen in Bischofshofen after a completely unsuccessful first jump and was later disqualified. This brought criticism from Schlierenzauer and an instruction from the ÖSV leadership.
For Spisprung’s record winning World Cup with 53 wins, Bischofshofen’s exit after the first round was another low blow in no time. After a weak start to the season, Schlierenzauer had not entered the tour lineup for German competitions and, more recently, had not qualified for the second round when he returned to the big stage at Bergisel.
Stubai’s man at Bischofshofen showed an upward trend in practice and with the 10th best distance in the test run. In the competition, however, his jump missed, landing at 115 meters.
Stecher: “That was definitely his mistake”
“Even in such a bitter defeat, you need strength. This strength also includes going to the inspection of materials ”, said Mario Stecher, Director of Nordic Sports, facing his superstar, who despite great efforts has not found his way back to the top of the world for years. “I think (control) was anything but correct for Gregor out of emotion. However, it must be said: he is part of an athlete, that was undoubtedly a mistake on his part ”.
At ÖSV, they continue to believe in a return of Schlierenzauer to the top of the world, Stecher emphasized. “If we, as the Austrian Ski Association, did not trust Gregor to do that, we would not support him any more. It’s not very far, the training jumps prove it. “
The pressure on Schlierenzauer is mounting
However, Stecher also increased the pressure. “However, he has to work on himself, especially in the near future, and look for mistakes in himself,” he said in the direction of the Stubaiers, who will turn 31 on Thursday. “Only then will he be able to reach the top at some point.” At the World Cup, Schlierenzauer cannot go directly to problem solving. There was no place for the veteran in ÖSV’s seven-person lineup for competitions at Titisee-Neustadt.
