In Semmering, in the Neunkirchen district of Lower Austria, there was a continuous influx of recreational athletes on Epiphany. However, compared to the previous days, at least in the morning, the rush was “limited”, said Mayor Hermann Doppelreiter (ÖVP). Thanks to the increased police presence, the municipality is currently “the best-guarded municipality in all of Austria,” said the local chief.
Furthermore, due to the new parking situation – a no longer used lane of the rural road on the Styrian side was blocked so that no more vehicles can be parked – the cars will now be distributed differently. “The causeway is filling up,” Doppelreiter said at noon. However, the situation was under control, the local politician referred to several police patrols from Lower Austria and Styria deployed in the Semmering area.

The rise of skiers and snowboarders does not cause any problems. About 65 percent of the tickets available online for Wednesday were sold. Additionally, the mayor explained that the avalanche of sleds and walkers was manageable. Doppelreiter cited the persistent snowfall as a possible reason, which would make smaller winter sports possible for many foreigners in the vicinity of their own home.
In general, the local boss referred to a very elastic situation in terms of influx to the winter sports area. “Every day is different. Even in half an hour, everything can be completely different again.”
