With a jump to 129 meters, Halvor Egner Granerud secured victory in qualifying for the third competition of the Four Hills Tournament. The leader of the circuit general scored a total of 132.2 points at the Bergisel in Innsbruck and thus beat Austrian Daniel Huber, who reached 127.5 meters (128.9 pts). Third place went to Garmisch winner Dawid Kubacki with a jump of 128 meters (128.7 pts).
Under extremely fair conditions, the 24-year-old Norwegian was the measure of all things on Saturday and made it clear that victory in the third competition of the Four Hills Tournament will be his. Granerud continues to have the best prospects for Norway’s first overall victory at the Four Hills Tournament since 2007.
Markus Eisenbichler Best DSV Ski Sweater
The German ski jumpers qualified for Sunday’s competition, but only Markus Eisenbichler was able to take the lead, finishing fourth behind Kubacki at 127 meters. “That wasn’t a grenade, it was a rock solid jump that I’m very happy with,” Eisenbichler said.
Karl Geiger has calculated more: the most promising DSV ski jumper in the fight for the overall victory has improved after moderate training jumps and finished in seventh place with 125 meters.
Horngacher: “Much work remains to be done”
“It was a difficult day for us, we didn’t start well and we weren’t ready for the hill. Our two best athletes, Geiger and Eisenbichler, did the last race well. But there is definitely a lot to do for tomorrow, ”said national coach Stefan Horngacher.
In addition, Martin Hamann (20th), Pius Paschke (35th), Severin Freund (41st) and Constantin Schmid (46th) survived the preliminary round of the German team.
Poland and Austria are strong as a team
As at the last New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Poles were impressively strong: in addition to Kubacki, two other athletes, Kamil Stoch (fifth) and Piotr Zyla (eighth), placed in the top ten.
Three of Austria’s hosts with Huber, Stefan Kraft (6th) and Philipp Aschenwald (10th) were in the top ten. In between, Peter Prevc from Slovenia took ninth place.
