“This year will be better,” that is what Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen promises in his New Year’s speech. In addition to happiness and health, Van der Bellen also wishes “the courage to dream”. Because, according to the head of state: “Now is the time when we must dream of how we can improve our world.” In his speech, he specifically addressed nature conservation, but also togetherness, as well as flight and poverty.
Use Corona’s time to think
Despite the confidence that the pandemic will end soon, Van der Bellen advocates that we use this time to reflect and not forget about 2020. Because: Many habits are “quite problematic.” You have to decide if you really want to return to them or if you want to build a new and better world than the old one. “How about, for example, if we get used to seeing a flourishing economy and a flourishing nature not as opposites, but as goals that are mutually dependent?” Says Van der Bellen. The main question for Van der Bellen is: “What future do we want to see?” The head of state called for the use of climate-friendly technologies.
Mutual respect
“What if we softened the glaring contrast between well-protected and fled or between rich and poor?” Van der Bellen addressed the refugee crisis. The federal president also emphasized that society will be strengthened through mutual respect. “How about we break the trend toward ruthlessness and aggression, the trend to retreat into our own virtual bubble and fight bitterly against other opinions?”
The federal president recently called for a greater appreciation of liberal democracy and the European Union.
