Exactly one year ago, China informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about the first corona infections. On December 31, 2019, Chinese authorities informed the WHO Beijing office that a new virus had apparently caused respiratory illness in several dozen people in the metropolis of Wuhan.
On January 7, the pathogen known today as SARS-CoV-2 was isolated, and on January 12, China published its genetic sequence.
The coronavirus has been a problem for a year
The APA reported on December 31, 2019 (according to a dpa report) of a “mysterious lung disease” that broke out in central China. The party organ “Volkszeitung” quoted experts at the time that the cause was still unclear. However, it cannot be concluded that it is the SARS virus, the newspaper wrote. A person-to-person transmission or infection from medical personnel has not yet been discovered, authorities said.
The first infections, which the WHO later classified as corona infections, date back to December 8, 2019. Since then, the pathogen has spread rapidly. Currently, around 82 million infections have been detected worldwide and more than 1.79 million infected people have died. The pandemic and countermeasures are affecting the lives and economies of people around the world. In China itself, the virus has been largely controlled with strict measures such as closing entire cities and mass testing.
