northAfter a visit from Saint Nicholas, 26 residents of a retirement home in Belgium died from an infection with the coronavirus. The man disguised as Santa Claus was a carrier of the corona virus, but was unaware of its contagion, as announced this Thursday by the Flemish health authorities. Only later did he test positive.
169 people are currently housed in the Antwerp province nursing home, an employee of the AFP news agency said. 85 residents and 40 employees were infected with the corona virus.
The man dressed as Santa Claus paid a visit to residents on December 5, and the crown outbreak was noticed a few days later. Virologist Marc Van Ranst noted that most of those infected in the nursing home were infected “from the same source.” The spokesman for the Flemish health authority, Joris Moonens, emphasized, however, that “there is no certainty” that San Nicolás has infected the residents.
Nursing homes and nursing homes in Belgium are particularly affected by the corona crisis: 11,066 home residents have died with the corona virus since the pandemic began. That corresponds to about 57 percent of all deaths in the country. In November, the human rights organization Amnesty International accused the Belgian government of “neglecting” nursing homes during the pandemic.
