Austrian ski jumpers can start the new year with a good feeling. The seven Austrians qualify for the New Years event (2pm) at the Four Hills Tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The most successful is Stefan Kraft: in the standings, the Salzburg man lands in fourth place after a 137-meter set, and is just 2.5 points below the top. The winner of the standings is Anze Lanisek from Slovenia, half a point ahead of World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud (NOR) and 0.7 points ahead of Markus Eisenbichler (GER).
Oberstdorf winner Karl Geiger (GER) is fifth behind Kraft, followed by Kamil Stoch (POL).
Michael Hayböck lands in twelfth place, Daniel Huber in fifteenth place and Philipp Aschenwald, winner of the standings at the start in Oberstdorf, is 23. Markus Schiffner (28th), Jan Hörl (41st) and Thomas Lackner (46th ) are dominated by Qual.
Last year’s winner, Marius Lindvik, who traveled to Innsbruck to see a doctor due to a severe toothache, was not at the top of qualifying. The Norwegian finished third in the opening competition.
Austrian duel and tough opponents
The qualifying result does not bring the ÖSV eagles easy opponents in the New Years event.
Besides an ÖSV duel between Philipp Aschenwald and Markus Schiffner, Thomas Lackner and Karl Geiger probably have the toughest opponent.
Stefan Kraft faces Polish Aleksander Zniszczol, Jan Hörl faces Norwegian Johann Andre Forfang. Michael Hayböck meets Piotr Zyla (POL) and Daniel Huber meets Ziga Jelar (SLO).
The most important eliminatory duels:
Markus Schiffner by Philipp Aschenwald
Ziga Jelar (SLO) – Daniel Huber
Piotr Zyla (POL) – Michael Hayböck
Jan Hörl as Johann Andre Forfang
Thomas Lackner by Karl Geiger
Aleksander Zniszczol (POL) – Stefan Kraft
Evgeniy Klimov (RUS) – Markus Eisenbichler (GER)
Sander Vossan Eriksen (NOR) – Halvor Egner Granerud (NOR)
David Siegel (GER) – Anze Lanisek (SLO)
