Then go!
Until the final race of 2020, Austrian ski fans had to wait for their first success of the season, for which they were offset by a double win in the downhill classic in Bormio.
A stupid four hundredths separates winners Matthias Mayer and Vincent Kriechmayr at the end, and then scorn runs into the finish area. Also because the annoying questions after ÖSV’s first win are finally removed.
“I am happy for our team to have won the race. Now, at least in public, we don’t have so much pressure and people don’t talk so much and we can continue working in peace,” Kriechmayr said in an interview with ORF. .
13 brings luck to Mayer
“The relief is, of course, very great because the season did not start optimally for me,” Mayer explains. For Carinthian it is their 10th World Cup victory, their fifth with start number 13. The last time they won relegation at Kvitfjell was in March, just before the end of the previous season. Now you can also call yourself a Stelvio winner. List of winners in Bormio >>>
“I really got involved, top to bottom. Four hundredths, an extremely close race,” says Mayer at ORF. “It was a good ride, it was different from practice. Some places were a bit more ‘more comfortable’ to drive, some places were more difficult again because there were more bumps.
Kriechmayr, whom the demanding Stelvio challenged less than expected, confirms this impression. “It was another good race for me. It was, stupid as it may sound, much easier to drive than it was in practice. The light was very good too, so it was a close race.”
Mayer: “Vinc probably didn’t give it his all”
Upper Austria even has to admit: “I don’t even dare to say it, but I was not that tired at the finish line. I could have had to duck more, then it could have worked. I thought I had to. I save my strength and then In the end I thought to myself, I had saved too much, “says Kriechmayr with a smile.
“He was blue at the finish line. The Vinc probably didn’t give it his all, that must have been four hundredths,” Mayer jokes.
Bottle of wine as an incentive
The two speed aces are not on the podium together for the first time. In January, Hahnenkamm’s descent order in Kitzbühel was also Mayer before Kriechmayr. In 2018 they even celebrated an ex-aequo downhill win at Aare.
“We agreed that if we won we would buy a bottle of wine, maybe that’s the incentive,” Mayer says with a wink.
Kriechmayr hopes to be able to reverse the order soon: “We will manage that too.” Austrian ski fans would be happy.
The duo ÖSV makes Schröcksnadel a joy
And probably also the president of the ÖSV, Peter Schröcksnadel, who would like to win back the Nations Cup for his final season in office.
“The public has high expectations, but our president always says we should focus on skiing and take it easy,” says Kriechmayr. “He is a true fan of skiing and of course it is nice when we can make him happy.”
The joy of everyone involved should carry over into the new year if possible. “The self-confidence of the classics in Wengen and Kitzbühel is naturally reinforced,” Mayer lets out a challenge.
