Storm damage in Semmering was limited – winter sports – alpine skiing

Flying banners and route barriers instead of skiers fighting for victory! On Monday, Sturm caused dramatic scenes at the Semmering Giant Slalom.

For Tuesday’s slalom (starting at 15:15 on the LIVE ticker), the storm had no consequences. “The damage seemed more than it was at the end,” reports Rupert Steger of ÖSV Event Marketing.

The track employees, on the other hand, had to work hard to get the new, compact snow off the race track before the first round of the illuminated slalom at 3:15 p.m.

No injuries

On Monday, the giant slalom had to be stopped before the second lap for safety reasons, because suddenly gusts of wind of up to 110 km / h hit the Hirschenkogel and even metal structures collapsed in the finish area.

As if by miracle, no one was hurt by the falling and flying parts. From this point of view, it was also fortunate that spectators were not allowed this time due to Corona. With 10,000 fans or more, cleaning up the race venue would have been much more difficult.

Of course, the best intermediate time of the Slovak Petra Vlhova was irrelevant, because the race will not continue, but will start again in the new year. The women of the ÖSV lost the opportunity to improve, which after Katharina Liensberger’s 14th place as best local rider would have been urgently needed.

Cleaning done quickly

In Semmering, after a significant improvement in the weather, the damage assessment began Tuesday at 5 a.m.

Steger reported that the essential elements of the target area had already been restored by 7:00 a.m.

Shiffrin presents the “Kindness Award”

A special event had to be postponed to Tuesday due to the crashed storm. Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) presented the friendship medal to an employee of the local racing organization at the “Kindness Wins” course in Semmering.

Fritz Kremsl, WSV member and track helper, has been indispensable for 25 years, according to the award ceremony before the slalom. Shiffrin, a four-time Semmering winner, has joined the non-profit collaboration to support friendship initiatives. The founder of the initiative is the American tennis player Madison Keys.
