“We are not sufficiently prepared for the current (pandemic), much less for the next,” experts said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global community must better prepare for future pandemics. “This is a wake-up call,” WHO’s director of medical emergencies Michael Ryan said on Monday, looking to the crown crisis.
“This pandemic is very serious.” The new corona virus has spread “extremely fast” around the world. The mortality rate is comparatively low. “We have to prepare for something that can be even more violent,” Ryan said.
Not properly prepared
WHO expert Bruce Aylward also urged greater vigilance. It is true that great scientific advances have been made in vaccine development since the start of the corona pandemic. However, the “second and third waves” of the pandemic are not yet under control. “We are not adequately prepared for the current (pandemic), let alone the next,” Aylward said.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed hope that the crown crisis has raised awareness of future health risks. But he also called for greater efforts to be prepared to defend against future dangers.
