Innsbruck (OTS) LH Günther Platter’s ÖVP lost a lot of confidence this year, the image of Tyrol has suffered greatly, also due to the political vice-presidents. But this still does not affect the party because it continues to benefit from the weakness of the opposition.

Anyone who assumes in late 2020 that regular elections will be held in Tyrol in early 2023 may be wrong. Politicians are reluctant to vote in winter, and parties must mobilize in city council and mayor elections in early 2022. Thus, there are many indications that state elections will be pushed forward until fall 2022. Viewed this way , Vice President and Governor Günther Platter could be satisfied with the current political barometer of TT and with 43 percent of his Tyrolean vice president.
Because the ÖVP did not do well politically in the Corona year:
The Ischgl crisis management, the no-confidence motion against health judge Bernhard Tilg or the whore derailment of Platter’s closest confidante, LHStv. Josef Geisler not only shook state politics, but especially the ÖVP. Suddenly he points a finger at the Tyrol outside, the image of the country, which the ÖVP still likes to associate with “We Tyrolese”, has suffered greatly. And it still suffers when Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder mocks that half of Europe was infected by Ischgl. Or Tyrolean politics has to face another sexist debate.
The loss of confidence generally runs through the parties, but the ÖVP in particular has clearly lost its ability to solve problems in the opinion of the population. Which, of course, he would urgently need to deal with the consequences of the crown or to persuade them to get vaccinated. However, none of this affects the will to change parties. Because alternatives may be lacking.
The Greens are stagnant, Corona overshadows everything, even the fight against climate change. The green party won meters in the previous year, while at the same time proving to be a loyal coalition partner for the ÖVP. In good and bad. So why give up black for green?
And for the SPÖ? The party president, Georg Dornauer, swore in the Corona crisis a frontal attack: against the ÖVP and Platter. Dornauer is still miles away from his goal of setting the SPÖ in Tirol by more than 20 percent. Perhaps because he himself is the brake and has little confidence in the population. After Ibiza, the FPÖ is still in the discovery phase, only the NEOS could benefit from discounts on the ÖVP. However, at a low level.
Sometimes the weakness of the opposition is Platter’s luck. The politically dangerous thing about this situation: It’s easy to overlook your own black deficits.
