For the ÖSV women’s team, the World Cup at home in Semmering started with a big brake. Because on Sunday Bernadette Schild was seriously injured again during slalom training at the Reiteralm and will be out for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old from Salzburg suffered a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus, as well as a bone contusion to her left knee. Schild underwent surgery at the Innsbruck Kettenbrücke sanatorium on Sunday.
Cruciate ligament torn in October 2019
The technology specialist and sister of Marlies Raich remains faithful to bad luck. In October of the previous year, Schild tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee in the first game of the season in Sölden in the giant slalom and was also out for the rest of the winter. At the time, Schild quickly made it clear that the end of a race was not an issue. “There are still many winters left after this,” the Salzburg woman wrote from the hospital at the time. Plus, he kept saying, “Only what you like can really hurt.”
Schild had been injured on the same slope where her older sister Marlies, who resigned in 2014 and was married to Benjamin Raich, suffered serious leg injuries in October 2008 during preparatory training. Marlies Raich had to digest several serious knee injuries and remained a world champion and one of the best slalom runners of all time. Her 35 World Cup victories were only stopped or surpassed by American Mikaela Shiffrin in late 2018.
So far no World Cup victory
Bernadette Schild has so far been denied a World Cup victory. In 2019 he had to digest the worst setback of his career to date, having been unlucky in racing in previous years. The tech specialist missed a medal at the 2018 Olympics for a “blackout.” After that, he had also failed several times in the World Cup due to great success. In the middle, he was about to put on his hat, he confessed once.
At Semmering, Schild would only have been destined for Tuesday’s night slalom. The 30-year-old had chosen the Sölden Giant Slalom as his return race in October but did not qualify there. At the two most recent Courchevel giant slaloms, Schild was no longer in the RTL lineup for the women’s ÖSV.
